Anthea Stayt

New Plymouth born, contemporary artist Anthea has excelled in the creation of clay sculpture and ceramic art. She creates stunning pots, bowls, torsos and koru from white stoneware or paper clay using the traditional hand coiling technique. Anthea developed her own distinctive style where her clay forms became her canvas. By layering and painting in an abstract manner, Anthea creates a unique finish to her bold and contemporary sculptural works of art. Her work continues to evolve as new ideas are explored.

Featured “Rainbow Collection” in our gallery is a sample of Anthea’s stunning work.

From the Artist

“I am a contemporary ceramic artist whose intention is to create a unique and sculptural piece of art that demands attention. I achieve this by hand building each pot using the traditional coiling technique and sculpting the bowls from slab rolled clay. After a high bisque firing, the clay becomes my canvas.
I brush on layers of vibrantly coloured oils to produce the decorative and intriguing finish that has become my signature style.

I have participated in many solo and shared exhibitions including the NZ Art Show and NZ Sculpture Onshore as well as a finalist in both the Waiclay National and NZ Portage Awards.

My work has been recognised with Premier and Supreme prizes in regional exhibitions.
I am a member of the Taranaki Arts Trail board and I have opened my studio as part of this event for three years. I am also a member of Ceramics NZ and New Plymouth Potters Inc.
